Hans-Christian Jetter is a Professor of Interaction Design and User Experience at the University of Lübeck.
His research interests focus on human-computer and human-data interaction, with the aim of creating novel computer systems that enable individuals or teams to interactively explore, visualize, and understand complex data sets and models. This is achieved through the use of ubiquitous computing (e.g., interactive tables, walls, and rooms), mixed reality (e.g., augmented and virtual reality), and artificial intelligence. The emphasis is on providing a simple, "natural," or "intuitive" interaction with the systems for various application domains, including air traffic control, participatory urban planning, natural sciences, or art history.
After studying Information Engineering (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) at the University of Konstanz, he received his doctorate (summa cum laude) in 2013 in Professor Harald Reiterer's Human-Computer Interaction group. Research interests of his work at Konstanz included desktop-based visual information seeking systems for digital libraries and interactive tables and spaces for collaborative knowledge work and visualization.
During his PhD, he completed research stays at Microsoft Research Cambridge (Professor Natasa Milic-Frayling) and Cambridge University (Professor Jeremy Baumberg) in 2009 and 2011 on the topic of tangible user interfaces and interactive tables for e-Science, e.g. in nanophotonics
This work continued in 2013/2014 as a Research Associate and Postdoc in the Intel Collaborative Research Institute for Sustainable Connected Cities (ICRI Cities) at University College London with Professor Yvonne Rogers. Here, the research focus was primarily on collaborative urban data visualization using multi-device interaction and visualization.
In 2015, Hans-Christian Jetter became a Professor of User Experience and Interaction Design at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria (Hagenberg Campus), where he led research projects in the field of interactive and collaborative Big Data visualization, hybrid collaboration, and user experience for industrial visualizations/HMIs. Together with Professor Christoph Anthes, he established and led the new research group HIVE (Human Interfaces and Virtual Environments) in 2019.
In 2020, he was appointed Professor of Interaction Design and User Experience at the University of Lübeck. He was promoted to Full Professor (W3) in May 2024.
