ALS-NEMO
The Network Environment for Multimedia Objects (NEMO) is a media repository developed as part of the basic research project "Ambient Learning Spaces" funded by the DFG and serves as a central backend. It consists of various modules:
- user authentication,
- conversion of data,
- contextualization services of the central repository of the logic of the learning programs as well as the
- common relational and semantic data management.
The semantically annotated multimedia content, in the form of text, image, audio, video, or 3D, is represented as NEMO media files, stored in the NEMO databases and can be annotated, personalized or contextualized as well as adapted to devices and stored in NEMO media objects (MO). Categorization in corresponding semantic ontologies plays a special role. Images can also be automatically assigned to specific categories via an image analysis component.
Through the front-ends of the ALS Teaching and Learning Applications developed and used at IMIS, access to NEMO is performed from different contexts. The user is thus enabled to create media content or to have it provided for enriching the physical world (e.g. a learning environment). NEMO is able to filter the media output based on user and device information and to consider user preferences in its output. In addition, the system interacts with localization data, accesses usage histories, has the option of cross-device interaction (XDI) and barrier-free output in the context of ALS learning applications. Some of the ALS applications are used for content creation and editing. These are tightly connected and embedded in ALS. Using the ALS Portal users, applications and their content can be managed.
